FAQ's
Q:My house has one unit that cools and heats the upstairs and downstairs of my house, and the upstairs is always warmer. Can anything be done? A: Yes, a system can be added, or zone dampers can be installed that are operated automatically.
Q: How often should I change my filter? A: If you are using inexpensive filters, change your filter every 30-60 days during unit operation. There are filters available for extended use.
Q:Can I just put additional filters on my unit to make it filter better? A: Your unit that moves the air in your house is designed for a certain amount of restriction, and if you cause too much restriction on the system it will shorten the life of your system. Your unit may freeze up, and, or your furnace can overheat, and your compressor can be damaged.
Q: Can I run my unit without a filter? A: It is not wise, if your unit does not have a filter, the coil starts to act as your filter and can become clogged, this is somtimes difficult and expensive to clean.
Q: What is the best filter available for my system? A: A hepa filter is the best and most effective filter on the market. It is the same type filter that is used for hospital operating rooms. All hepa filters for residential systems must be a bypass type filter with its own fan. This is to prevent overworking and damage to your system.
Q:What does SEER stand for, and what does it matter? A: Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. The best way to explain is that it can be compared to gas mileage. If your unit is a 6 SEER and it costs $100 per month to operate, and you replace it with the same capacity unit with a 12 SEER unit, your unit cost will be $50 per month.
Q: What does efficiency on a furnace mean? A: If you have a furnace that is 80% AFUE, that means that you are getting 80% of the heat produced in real heat, and if it is 90%AFUE, that means that you are getting 90% of the heat produced. The remaining amount is lost through your furnace vent. If your furnace has a pilot light that is burning constantly, your furnace is probably less than 80%.
Q:What is more efficient - an electric furnace or a heat pump? A:The heat pump costs less to operate than an electric furnace when the temperature outside is above freezing. An electric furnace is 100% efficient but, is the most costly to operate in most cases.
Q: What is the best equipment on the market? A: Most of the heating and cooling equipment on the market is manufactured with very high standards. The most important part is how the unit is installed. If you install the most exspensive unit on the market with the most efficient model available, and it is installed improperly it will not matter what brand you have. Have your unit installed by someone that stands by their work, and is insured. Q: What is flat rate pricing, and why not pay by the hour? A: Flat rate protects the customer from paying more for someone that is less experienced. If you pay by the hour you will pay more for the less experienced.
Q: If my a/c unit is over 5 years old, should I replace the compressor or replace the unit if the compressor goes out? A: Typically it is wise to replace the unit after the manufacturers warranty is out on the unit. This way you will receive a warranty on the new unit compressor for at least 5 years. If you install a compressor the warranty usually is only 1 year.
